is Spyware?
"Spyware is any software
(that) employs a user's Internet connection in the background (the
so-called 'backchannel') without their knowledge or explicit
permission. Silent background use of an Internet 'backchannel'
connection must be preceded by a complete and truthful disclosure of
proposed backchannel usage, followed by the receipt of explicit,
informed consent for such use. Any software communicating across the
Internet absent of these elements is guilty of information theft and
is properly and rightfully termed: Spyware."

Preventative Solutions:
Do not download security programs based on web page or email
advertising, these are spyware programs spoofing themselves as
anti-spyware programs. WinHaven has listed the most effective
anti-spyware programs on our web pages in order to help you
decide which to use. As of 2007 we strongly recommend
Counter-Spy version 2. It is a "second generation anti-spyware
program that can stop spyware from installing in the first
place. It also can stop hybrid spyware/virus programs. For the

Anti-Spyware Prevention Programs:
Anti-Spyware Scanners with active protection must be
installed on your computer. Once they are installed they run in
the background and prevent spyware from getting a foothold on
your computer. If you attempt to
download and install spyware or other malicious type
programs (either purposefully or by "being fooled
into it") the active protection will warn you and
may even prevent you from doing so, depending on how
it has been configured. Here are our recommendations
