These procedures are for emergency
response situations, such as:
Your Windows computer is acting strange and you
can't seem to do anything without it displaying
error screen or crashing.
Your computer does not start up properly.
You can no longer browse the Internet the way you
want because your browser displays pages you don't
want to see.
If you are fairly confident in your computer
ability you may attempt to resolve the problems by following these
steps:
Create a new folder on your C: drive and
Download the following programs into that folder
(If you cannot perform these steps on your own
computer go to another computer and download
them to a USB flash device or burn them to a
CD.)
Download SysClean an emergency
anti-virus by Trend Micro for cleaning up
damaged systems
Download the latest Trend Micro
Virus
Pattern File
If you do not have an anti-virus
program with a valid subscription for
updates - download AVG
Free Edition
(free for home use only). CA's
CA Anti-virus is also very good and
does not drag your PC speed down as do
some other products. It is what we
recommend for Small Offices and
Businesses. (They also have an excellent
corporate edition of their AV product
for larger businesses.)
If you previously have had
Symantec's "Norton" security products
installed download their
Norton Removal Tool.
If you previously have had McAfee's
security products installed download
their
McAfee Consumer Product Removal
Tool.
Download an Anti-Spyware Program:
Download Sunbelt Software's 15-day trial of CounterSpy.
Download and Anti-rootkit program
Download F-Secure's
Black Light Anti-rootkit program.
Download a Firewall
Download Sunbelt Personal Firewall
free 30-day trial.
It is a very good firewall for a small price
f you decide to pay for it. After 30 days it
operates in free mode which is also very
good.
Shutdown and Restart your computer into
"Safe Mode":
To do this (without making it permanent
by using the MSConfig application):
Click Start
Click Shutdown
Click Shutdown and Restart
When the computer begins to restart
press the F8 key repeatedly until a menu
is displayed which allows you to arrow
up and down to Safe Mode
Arrow up to "Safe Mode" and press
Enter.
Install and run the following programs
Install Antivirus
Read the SysClean instructions
Install and run SysClean
Run Anti-Rootkit Program:
Run the BlackLight program file
(fsbl.exe) it will run and inform you of
what needs to be done.
Shutdown and Restart Windows in Normal
Mode. (You should not have to do anything
else to accomplish this. But if a menu is
displayed use the Up arrow to highlight
Normal Mode and press Enter)
Install and configure the Anti-virus program
Configure it to automatically
update, every day
Install and configure CounterSpy
Choose yes for everything.
Run CounterSpy
Run a full scan of your computer
(this will take some time).
When the scan is complete it will
suggest removing or quarantining certain
files. Allow it to do whatever it
suggests.
CounterSpy will run all the time,
thereby helping to prevent infection. It is recommended that you
schedule a scan to do this weekly.
Install and configure a Firewall
Install using the preset "Automatic
Settings"
You will also find it useful to use a
Windows Optimization Program. We recommend PC
Pitstop's
Optimize! program. It is low cost and safe.
