Club History
The Upper Lakes Fishing Club was formed in 1987. It represents all of the Upper Lakes of the Winnebago system: Lake Butte des Morts, Lake Winneconne, and Lake Poygan.
The club was formed because of concern with the pollution level and the lack of vegetation in the lakes. These issues affect both the quality of fishing and the health of the fish.
Membership
The club is open to anyone 18 years old and older. If you are interested in joining please contact a club officer. Members receive a membership card and pin. Hats with the club logo are also available at the clubhouse.
Meetings
At meetings we discuss club projects and issues. We also host guest speakers such as: Ron Bruch, Jim Kempinger, and Art Techlow from the Department of Natural Resources in order to stay informed about problems and concerns regarding the Upper Lakes.
Club Projects & Issues
Some of the projects & issues with which the club has become involved:
- We are involved in the development and implementation of the DNR’s Lake Winnebago Comprehensive Management Plan.
- We traveled to Green Bay to support the closing of a lock to keep the Sea Lamprey out of the Upper Lakes and the Winnebago System.
- We supported state funding to complete the Terrel’s Island Breakwater Project in Lake Butte des Morts.
- We
participated in preserving the Upper Lakes cane beds, by posting signs around them which ask boaters to stay out of the cane beds.
- We worked with the Township of Omro to ensure safety for all boaters by putting reflective tape on the Springbrook Bridge.
- Kid’s Fisherees: The club sponsors a kids’ fisheree in June and conducts another fisheree for the Winneconne Sovereign State Committee in July.
- Kid’s fisherees are free for all kids 14 and under and trophies are awarded.
- This is our effort to promote interest and respect for the sport of fishing in children.
- The club also hosts other social functions for Upper Lakes Fishing Club Members.
